Glen Hansard portraits before and after Man Ray

Mar 4th 2013 | 0 COMMENTS

I visited the superb Man Ray exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery last week and was reminded of the outakes from a portrait session I did with Glen Hansard in 2012 where we solarised some of the images.

We were making portrait images for Glens album Rhythm and Repose and I had decided to shoot on film again using 10x8, 5x4 and some old out of date Polaroid Type55. The Polaroid creates a wonderful negative to print from and in this case we solarised the negatives. It isn’t a Photoshop effect, its in the negative, the effect happens for real as the developer on the film is still active when the negative is exposed to light so the remains of the developer create a reversed effect in parts of the image. I’ve added a few more images in this gallery from the same session.
